PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Gerald B. Demarest, III MD is the Chief of General Surgery at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  He was born on October 12, 1946.  He grew up in Westfield, New Jersey and graduated from Westfield High School in 1965.  He graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York with a BA in Zoology in 1969. He received his MD Degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York City, New York in 1973.

Dr. Demarest completed his residency training in General Surgery at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle, Washington in 1980.   He earned a Research Fellowship in Burns and Trauma at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington from 1976-1978.   He is board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Demarest is a Professor with Tenure at the University of New Mexico Department of Surgery. His special interests and expertise are Burns and Trauma, Wound Care and Critical Care Surgery.

Dr. Demarest is also a retired Captain in the United States Navy. As an Active Reservist he was assigned to the 4th Medical Battalion, 4th Marine Division and was deployed overseas on active duty on three separate occasions. He was actively involved in the development and use of the Naval Combat Surgical Platform, FRSS and served with one of these units during combat operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
